Great Lakes Firearms GL700 SUB-1 308 Win 18" 5rd Rifle

The black version of the Great Lakes SUB-1 is the plainest of the family and probably the most practical of them. It is a 308 Win bolt gun on a Remington 700 pattern action with an 18" stainless barrel, and the black finish keeps it from drawing eyes in a rack or a truck. Being a 700 clone matters more than any of the cosmetics: aftermarket triggers, bases and bottom metal fit without modification, so the rifle can be built out a piece at a time.

The 18" barrel is the defining feature of this configuration. It handles like a carbine, it clears blind windows and brush that a 24" tube fights, and in 308 Win it still carries plenty of energy to any distance most hunters actually shoot. A picatinny rail comes fitted to the receiver so scope mounting is straightforward, and the detachable box magazine holds 5 rounds. Stainless is the right call on a barrel that will see rain and snow, and the 700 pattern action means a trigger, a stock or a set of bottom metal can be swapped later without a gunsmith and without hunting for proprietary parts.
