Colt's Combat Unit Government is the Government model reworked with input from U.S. Special Operations trainers, and this version adds a factory optic cut to the slide. The 5 inch stainless National Match barrel is the same piece Colt puts in its accuracy focused guns. Slide and frame are forged steel; the slide wears matte black DLC and the frame a black Ion Bond finish, both hard coatings that shrug off holster wear and sweat.

The details are what separate a Combat Unit gun from a standard Government. The slide is serrated and cut to take a red dot on Colt mounting plates, so an optic goes on without a machinist getting involved. A beavertail grip safety sits at the rear of the frame, which keeps the web of the hand off the hammer and lets the gun be gripped high. Grey G10 panels give the hand traction without shredding a cover garment. Eight rounds of 45 ACP in a steel framed Government is a familiar formula, and the weight of a full size steel 1911 is what keeps the big cartridge civilized: recoil arrives as a push rather than a snap and the sights settle back quickly.
