About the H&R Retro 723 5.56
The Retro 723 rebuilds the carbine that filled the gap between the M16A1 based carbines and the M4 that eventually replaced them. The lower carries H&R M16A2 markings and the upper is an M16A1 pattern with no feed ramps cut into it, which is the first detail a clone builder looks for. A rifle height front sight base sits where a modern gas block would hide under a rail, giving the gun the tall sight tower and short handguards that define the period. Nothing about the layout is modern.
The 14.7" barrel is pinned and welded out to 16", so it stays a standard rifle with no extra steps at the counter. Behind it sits a 6 position carbine buffer tube with a CAR style stock and an A2 grip, both correct for the pattern. One 30rd magazine comes in the box. The gun is light, plain and honest about what it is: a keep it simple carbine with iron sights and no rail space to fill. Use it as the base for a clone build and swap in the parts you have been collecting, or leave it alone and shoot it the way it left the rack.
