About the Cimarron Frontier Maple Flint
The Cimarron Frontier Maple Flint is a 250th anniversary commemorative 45 caliber muzzleloader with a maple stock and forend and true flintlock ignition. It is a reproduction of the American long rifle carried on the frontier during the Revolution, the kind of gun the Overmountain militia took with them to Kings Mountain in 1780. Maple was the stock wood of choice for that era of American gunmaking, and the figure that runs through a good piece of it is why these rifles are still built the same way.
A flintlock is a slower and far more deliberate gun than anything that uses a primer. Powder goes down the barrel, then a patched ball, then the pan is primed and the frizzen closed. When the flint strikes, the shooter has to hold position through the flash in the pan before the main charge fires, and learning to do that without flinching is the whole skill. Cimarron catalogs this one as a commemorative, so it works on a wall as easily as on a range, but it is a functioning muzzleloader rather than a display replica.
