New Savage Rifles in Stock: Which One Fits Your Hunt

by Shooting Surplus

Savage 110 Core Hunter bolt-action rifle in 30-06 Springfield with a 20-inch barrel and gray stock

Twelve Savage bolt guns, sorted by what you hunt

Savage's late-September shipment is on the shelf and every rifle in it is in stock. There are twelve of them across the 110 Ultralite, 110 Core, Axis 2 XP and Axis XP lines. Model names only tell you so much, so this time we sorted them by the job: a first scoped deer rifle, a step-up package gun, a plain working rifle, and a light rifle for long walks. All of them are firearms, so they ship to the licensed dealer you choose. If this is your first gun order with us, read how to buy a firearm online before you check out.

First scoped deer rifle: Axis XP

The Axis XP is the entry point in this batch, and it comes with a 3-9x40 scope already on it. Three came in, all with a 4-round capacity. The full-size Axis XP in 7mm-08 Remington is the one for an adult shooter who wants a complete package out of the box. The two Compact models suit shorter-framed or younger hunters: a 7mm-08 Remington with a 20-inch barrel, and a 350 Legend with an 18-inch barrel. 350 Legend has caught on with deer hunters in areas that limit rifle cartridges, so check your state's hunting regulations before you pick it.

Step-up package gun: Axis 2 XP

The Axis 2 XP keeps the 3-9x40 scope and the 4-round capacity and adds a choice of chamberings. The Axis 2 XP in 25-06 Remington has a 20-inch barrel and an OD Green stock. The 7mm-08 Remington and 22-250 Remington versions come in gray. Deer and antelope hunters will look at the 25-06 and 7mm-08. The 22-250 is the varmint and coyote gun of the three. If you are not sure which chambering you want, the whole Savage line sits on our rifles page where you can compare them side by side.

Plain working rifle: 110 Core

The 110 Core is the no-frills tier of the 110 line. The 110 Core Hunter in 30-06 Springfield has a 20-inch barrel, a 4-round capacity and a gray stock, and it is the all-around big game pick of this batch. Its sibling, the 110 Core Hunter in 6.5 PRC, runs a 22-inch barrel and a 2-round capacity in the same gray stock. The third Core is for left-handed shooters: a 110 Core Predator in 7mm-08 Remington with a left-hand action. Left-hand bolt guns are rare on our shelf and we have one of them, so do not sit on it.

Light rifle for long walks: 110 Ultralite

The Ultralite rifles are the premium tier here, built for hunters who carry a rifle farther than they shoot it. The 110 Ultralite Pro Woodland has a 20-inch barrel, a 3-round capacity and a Woodland camo finish. The 110 Ultralite Pro Western is the same 20-inch, 3-round layout in 6.5 Creedmoor with a different camo pattern. The 110 Ultralite Predator changes the recipe: 5.56 NATO, an 18-inch barrel, a 10-round magazine and a Hunter Green finish. That one is for the coyote caller, not the elk hunter.

How the order works

Add the rifle to your cart, check out, and send us the license for the dealer you want it shipped to. We ship the rifle to that dealer, and you finish the background check and paperwork at their counter. Stock on a few of these is thin, especially the left-hand Core Predator and the Compact Axis XP models, so if one of them fits your season, order it before it goes.
