Six rounds instead of five is the whole argument for the Taurus 856, and the Ultra-Lite version makes that argument without adding weight. An aluminum frame keeps the gun light enough for pocket, ankle or purse carry, while the barrel and cylinder are matte stainless for corrosion resistance where the working parts live. This one wears a sky blue frame finish against the bright cylinder, a combination that reads as a personal gun rather than a duty piece. The soft rubber grip is the same one Taurus uses across the 856 line and it earns its keep on a revolver this light.

Controls are about as simple as a defensive firearm gets. There is no safety lever to sweep, no slide to rack, and no magazine to seat. Load six, close the cylinder, and the gun is ready. The trigger is double action only with a smooth stroke that runs the same length every time, and the hammer is concealed inside the frame so nothing snags coming out of a pocket or from under a cover garment. A transfer bar blocks the firing pin until the trigger reaches the end of its travel. Sights are a serrated ramp up front and a fixed rear notch, and the gun is rated for 38 Special +P.
