Smith & Wesson built the X-Frame in 2003 for one job: handling the 500 S&W Magnum, still one of the most powerful production revolver cartridges around. This 4 inch Model 500 is the compact version of that idea, pitched as a dangerous game backup handgun. Barrel, cylinder and frame are all stainless steel in a satin finish, and the cylinder holds five rounds.

Recoil is the question everyone asks about, and the answer here is the removable muzzle compensator. Two come with the gun: one set up for jacketed bullets and one for lead bullets, so you can match the brake to what you shoot. It is a double action/single action revolver with an exposed hammer, a red ramp front sight and an adjustable rear, and black finger grooved rubber grips that soak up a surprising amount of the kick.
