About the Pietta 1873 Great Western
The Pendleton Round-Up edition of the 1873 Great Western II is a commemorative that still works for a living. Pietta engraves the bucking horse, the Let'er Buck tagline and the rodeo disciplines across a blued barrel and cylinder, then carries the pattern onto an ultra black grip so the gun reads as one piece rather than a decorated barrel bolted to a plain frame. The loading gate is on the right, the hammer is exposed, and the action is single action from the first click to the last.
This one is chambered in 45 Colt, the cartridge the 1873 pattern was born with and still the round most single action shooters reach for. Six in the cylinder, a 4.75" barrel, and enough weight ahead of the frame to hold the front sight steady without wearing out a wrist by the end of a stage. Light cowboy loads are soft to shoot all afternoon, and heavier loads turn the same gun into something a hog would respect. Pietta has been copying the 1873 for decades and the fit here shows it, from the cylinder lockup to the way the hammer falls.
