About the FN 309 MRD 9mm
FN built the 309 around an internal hammer instead of a striker, and that one choice drives most of what makes this pistol easy to run. Racking the slide takes noticeably less force than a striker gun of the same size, which matters for anyone with weak hands or a bad wrist. The trigger is single action only with a clean break rather than the long mushy takeup common to polymer duty guns. This version has no manual safety. The safeties are internal, including a takedown that does not require pulling the trigger first.
The 3.8" alloy steel barrel wears a recessed target crown, and the slide is cut for a direct mount optic on the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro or Shield RMSc footprint, so there is no plate stack between the dot and the slide. Irons are drift adjustable polymer with an over molded green fiber optic front and a rounded U notch rear, and they share a dovetail with the FN 509 if you want aftermarket sights. Two magazines come in the case, one 16 round and one 20 round, so the same pistol runs flat against the body or with a full grip and more ammunition. The frame carries a Picatinny rail for a light, the magazine release reverses, and the controls are ambidextrous.
