About the Colt Lightweight Commander 9mm
The Lightweight Commander is the Commander built on an aluminum frame, and the difference shows up on the belt rather than at the bench. Same 4.25" barrel, same slide, several ounces less to carry through a long day. This version is chambered in 9mm and the slide is cut for an optic, with a removable cover plate and a G style dovetail rear sight. A white dot front sight handles the iron sight duties until a dot goes on.
Aluminum framed 1911s have a reputation for being snappier than steel guns, and in 45 ACP that is a fair complaint. In 9mm the argument largely disappears. The cartridge is mild enough that the lighter frame is a straight gain for a gun that gets carried far more than it gets fired. Colt's dual spring recoil system keeps the slide from beating on the frame and stretches spring life, which addresses the other old knock on alloy 1911s. The frame is anodized, the grips are black cherry G10, and the upswept beavertail lets the hand sit high on the gun. Nine rounds in the magazine, single action trigger, thumb safety and grip safety exactly where a 1911 shooter reaches for them. For anyone who carries a 1911 daily and has been thinking about weight, this has been Colt's answer since 1950.
