Prairie Reaper camo tells you what Howa had in mind. This is a coyote and prairie dog rifle first and a deer rifle when the season changes. 243 Win drives light bullets fast enough to make hits obvious at distance and heavy enough ones to be legal and effective on deer, and the Burnt Bronze Cerakote over the barrel and receiver stays put through a summer of dog town work. The barrel measures 22", it is hammer forged, and the muzzle is threaded for a brake or a can.

The Howa 1500 action does the rest. An accuracy guarantee of 1" or better at 100 yards comes with the rifle, and the HACT two stage trigger is good enough that swapping it is a want rather than a need. The bolt lifts 90 degrees, locks on dual lugs, and drags empties out with a spring loaded M16 style extractor. Three position safety, so you can unload without taking the rifle off safe or lock the bolt closed for the drive between fields. The receiver comes drilled and tapped, the stock is fixed synthetic in Prairie Reaper Camo, and the whole rifle is put together to live in a truck rather than a safe.
