The square notch gives a flat top edge and clean vertical walls, which is what most shooters want for deliberate target work and for catching the front sight quickly when the shot is a fast one.

Sights get abused. Dropped guns, holster wear and decades of use all take a toll, and the rear is one of the cheaper things to put right on an otherwise good revolver. Before ordering, check that your revolver actually has the adjustable rear cut and not a fixed groove milled into the topstrap, since the two are not interchangeable.
