180gr sits at the heavy end of 357 Mag, well above the 125 and 158gr loads that fill most shelves. The added weight makes this a hunting load rather than a defense load: it trades muzzle velocity for momentum and drives deeper on deer and hogs.

Out of a lever carbine the longer barrel wrings real velocity from it and turns 357 Mag into a legitimate short range deer cartridge. In a revolver, recoil is firm but nowhere near a 44.
