A cable lock is the simplest way to keep a firearm from being fired. The cable passes through the action, the magazine well or the cylinder so a round cannot be chambered, and the lock closes on both ends of the cable. A lock like this takes seconds to fit and makes the condition of the gun obvious at a glance to anyone else in the room, which is the other half of what safe storage is for.
