About the Savage Axis XP Compact
The Axis XP Compact is the shorter stocked version of Savage's package rifle, put together for smaller framed shooters. The synthetic stock is cut for a shorter reach to the trigger, which is the difference between a new shooter shouldering a rifle properly and fighting it. Under that stock the rifle is standard Axis: a 20 inch button rifled barrel, thread-in headspacing, a threaded muzzle and a detachable 4 round box magazine, chambered here in 7mm-08 Rem.
Savage sells the XP as a complete setup, so the 3-9x40 scope arrives mounted and boresighted and the rifle is ready for a zero session rather than a trip to the gunsmith for rings and bases. The bolt handle on this generation is larger and reshaped for grip in bad weather. Finish is black synthetic on the stock. As a first deer rifle for a youth or a smaller adult, the combination of the shorter stock and the 7mm-08 Rem chambering is the reason this configuration exists.
