M-LOK slots take accessories directly, which counts for more on a short handguard because there is not much room to lose. A light goes onto the slot, not onto a rail section bolted to the slot, so it sits lower and adds less bulk. Empty faces are just handguard. On something this compact, every piece of unused hardware you leave off is noticeable in the hand.
