A bolt action in 7.62x39mm is a deliberate choice. You give up the fast follow up shot and you get better lockup, better accuracy potential and a rifle with far fewer parts to worry about. The cartridge is common and mild, recoil is close to nothing, and it does what a whitetail hunter in thick cover needs at the ranges thick cover actually allows.
