Very little in North America is out of reach of a 30-06 with the right bullet, which is why the cartridge has outlived a century of replacements. Loadings run from 110 grains for coyotes to 220 grains for heavy game, and every factory that makes rifle ammunition makes it. The X-Bolt 2 Hunter Grade II puts it in a checkered Grade II walnut stock with a satin finish and a 22" matte blued sporter barrel, the same shape of rifle people have carried in this chambering for generations, with the modern parts hidden inside.

Those parts are worth knowing about. The X-Bolt 2 update touched the receiver and the bolt while leaving the outside of the rifle traditional. The X-Lock scope mounting system uses four screws per base rather than two, so the mount stays put under the recoil of a full power 30-06 load. The muzzle is threaded and comes with a radial brake, which is a real consideration in this chambering: the 06 kicks enough that a brake or a suppressor changes how much practice a shooter is willing to put in before the season. Four rounds in the detachable magazine, right hand action, receiver drilled and tapped, and a stock that will still look good after twenty years of use.
