Ordering Ammo Online: Shipping, State Rules and Separate Boxes

by Shooting Surplus

The short version

Yes, we sell ammunition online and ship it. The rules on where it can go and how it travels are set by federal law, your state, sometimes your city, and the carrier, not by us. Two questions come up more than any others: "Can you ship ammo to my address?" and "Why did my ammo arrive in a different box, or not yet?" This post answers both, plus the other things buyers ask before they order.

Can you ship ammo to my state?

To most states, yes, straight to the address you give at checkout. Ammunition is restricted in some states and in some cities and counties inside otherwise open states. We keep the current list on our state restrictions page, and that page is the one to trust, because the rules change and a blog post can go stale.

We hear from California buyers about this more than anyone else, often from the Los Angeles area. The answer is the same for every restricted or partially restricted state: check the state restrictions page for your address before you order. If your situation is not clearly covered there, contact us with your city and state and we will tell you what we can do. Do not place the order first and hope.

One more thing to know: state rules can depend on the kind of ammunition, not just the address. If a product page or the cart blocks an item for your address, that is the system applying those rules, not a glitch.

I only got my magazines. Where is my ammo?

This is the most common "problem" with ammo orders, and it is usually not a problem. We ship from more than one warehouse. When one order has items that sit in different locations, each warehouse packs and ships its part separately. Your magazines left one building and your ammo left another, so they travel on their own tracking numbers and can land a day or more apart.

Check the shipping emails for your order. Each shipment gets its own tracking number, and the one for the missing box will show where it is. If a tracking number has not moved for several days, or you never received one for part of your order, reach out with your order number and we will chase it down. Please do not post order numbers publicly; send them to us directly.

Can I order ammo and a gun together?

You can put both in one order, but they will not arrive together. A firearm ships to the licensed dealer (FFL) you choose, never to your home, and you pick it up there after your background check. The ammunition in that same order ships separately, to the address allowed for your state. If you are new to buying a gun online, our walkthrough covers the dealer part step by step.

Is there an age requirement?

Yes. Federal law sets minimum ages for buying ammunition and some states set their own, and the age can depend on the type of ammunition. You must meet the requirement that applies to you. We are not going to quote the numbers here because they differ by state; the store policies page has what we require at checkout.

Is a signature required? Is there a quantity limit?

Both depend on your state and the carrier, and both are the kind of detail that changes. Rather than repeat a rule that may be out of date by the time you read this, we point you to the store policies page for signature and delivery terms, and to the state restrictions page for anything your state limits. Beyond that, the only limit is stock on hand, which you can see on the product page.

How much does ammo cost?

It depends on the caliber, the bullet type, and how many rounds are in the box. A 50-round box of practice pistol ammo and a 20-round box of premium hunting rifle ammo are different products at different prices, so "how much is a box of ammo" has no single answer. Prices move with the market, and we do not print them in blog posts because they would be wrong within weeks. The ammunition category shows the live price on every item. When you compare, look at the round count on the page so you are comparing like with like.

Do you carry hard-to-find calibers?

We get searches every month for calibers like 7-30 Waters, .25 WSSM, .30-40 Krag, 9x18 Makarov and .44 Special, usually asking whether anyone still makes them or whether they are hard to find. The honest answer is that stock on older and niche calibers comes and goes. Search the ammunition category by caliber for what is in stock right now. If it is not there today, check back; we add inventory as our distributors get it.

Before you order

Three steps save most of the headaches. First, look up your address on the state restrictions page. Second, confirm the round count and caliber on the product page. Third, once the order ships, expect more than one box if you ordered more than one kind of thing, and keep the tracking emails. If anything looks off, contact us with your order number and we will sort it out.

Frequently asked questions

We ship from more than one warehouse. Items stored in different locations ship in separate boxes with their own tracking numbers, so they can arrive on different days. Check the tracking email for each shipment.
